Sunset Santa Monica Pier

I shot this during Trey Ratcliff’s Photowalk across the USA. I already posted this photo as part of that gallery, but I wanted to write a bit about this photo in particular.

Shooting into the sun is very hard on your eyes – except if you are shooting mirrorless. This is one of the areas that mirrorless excels. All you have to do is set the camera to manual, dial in the aperture, ISO, and then adjust the shutter (set a fast shutter to start so you can look into the setting sun easily) until you like what you see on the screen, then pull the trigger. Optical viewfinders would be tough with this shot because you have to look directly into the sun, then chimp each shot until you have what you want. Yes, you can do it, but you will be seeing spots for a few minutes. I have already said that Sony has a long way to go, but this is one of the reasons I like mirrorless.

Peter Lik inspired Scripps Pier

I am a Peter Lik fan. I love his art. I have been to several of his galleries. One of his photos is of the Scripps Pier in La Jolla. I decided to take a shot at creating a similar photo to his shots – “Coastal Dreams” and “Solice“. Naturally I like mine better.
