Shooting the latest band

As I was telling the groom and his friends to look out over my shoulder, I had the feeling I was shooting an up-and-coming country band.

Palm Springs Windmill Engagement Photography

Palm Springs in the summer is over 100 degrees even in the morning. The trick is to shoot in the winter time, when the temp is a mere 60 degrees in the morning, and may get up to 75 in the afternoon. I shot this in the middle of one of the windmill farms near the freeway. The trailer belonged to the couple, and I had them back it down the road into the windmill farm. Since this was shot with a wide aperture, I had to use high speed sync to light this. There is no way a normal speedlite could have done this, so I used my Phottix Indra500 to light it.

Oceanside Beach Wedding

Shooting at sunset on the beach is one of my favorite situations to shoot in. You really cant go wrong. I normally combine natural and off camera lighting, and shoot many different poses. In this series, I asked the bride and groom to run from the water to the camera several times. This frame was my favorite. This shot really shows the couple’s personality, and I love it.

Wayfarers Chapel Wedding

Wayfarers Chapel wedding. I shot this at 9pm in the evening. The exposure was almost 2 seconds. I had the couple freeze during the exposure, and used a low power strobe to help make them pop. To the naked eye it was pitch black, I couldn’t see very much at all. I had to use a flashlight to focus before taking the shot. I had no idea that the clouds and stars were there before I took the shot. I was pleasantly surprised with the resulting image. Very minor adjustments were made in Photoshop.

Rhyolite Ghost Town

I arrived on scene about 11pm. After driving for hours, and arriving in the middle of nowhere, Nevada, I stepped out of the truck, and stared up at a brilliantly lit moon. I knew if I took the shot with the moon in the sky, I wouldn’t get the result I was looking for. I checked my phone for the moonset time, and went to sleep in the truck. My alarm woke me at about 3am. I got out of the truck, and stepped into a freezing wind. I started to setup my tripod, and soon realized that I could no longer move my fingers. Good thing I brought nice gloves along. After fumbling around with my tripod and camera with heavy gloves on – a feat that felt like I was in a space suit, I got out a flashlight to try and focus on the building – the Cook Bank. I did my best to try and frame the shot in the dark.

I pulled the trigger a little after 3am. I went back to the truck while the camera was still exposing, and got out a single strobe. There was no light to illuminate the building, and without light, the building would be barely visible in my shot. I walked back and forth in front of the building firing my strobe manually several times in an attempt to paint the building with light. I stopped the exposure after almost 40 minutes, and to my utter amazement, something came up on my LCD that made me smile. Well at least I had the bank correctly in my frame. This shot might not be great, or even good, but for those of you that have been through similar struggles, you know that even if you get anywhere near what you want, it is very gratifying.
